Anthem, Braga, Lisbon, Music, Photography, Portugal, Tomar, Travel

Composed in 1890, with lyrics by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça and music by Alfredo Keil, early on, A Portuguesa, was recognized as a patriotic symbol but also Republican. However, the approval of the official version would only occur in 1957.

The anthem has three parts, of which only the first is used in official ceremonies. The remaining two are virtually unknown but no less interesting.

Nowadays, every Portuguese knows the national anthem (much due to football and the Portuguese team), having become one of the most important symbols of the country.

Tomar, Portugal

Tomar is a town of great charm, with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and fine squares. But what makes Tomar extraordinary – and an intricate part of Portuguese history – is the Convento de Cristo, the hilltop headquarters of the legendary Knights Templar. This monastery is a  Unesco World Heritage site, and a great example of the symbioses of Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance architecture.

.
