The city nowadays known as London has gone through a variety of names during its history. At the time of the Roman Invasion it was called Londinium. In Saxon times it became known as Lundenwic. During the kingdom of Alfred the Great, Lundenburg was its name.

A cidade que hoje conhecemos como Londres já passou por vários outros nomes ao longo da sua história. No tempo das invasões Romana era Londinium. Nos tempos do império Saxónico passou a chamar-se Lundenwic. Já durante o reino de Alfredo, o Grande, Lundenburg era o seu nome.

Pride and Prejudice

I’ve referred Jane Austen before (View from Pompidou and Vanity vs. Pride), so by now  you already know I really appreciate her work. “Pride and Prejudice” was actually the first novel by her that I read and I remember I enjoyed it so much I bought “Sense and Sensibility” and “Mansfield Park” the following day. Today I felt like bringing you Pride and Prejudice, the TV Series,  which was already mentioned by our guest author DarkJade when he reviewed The King’s Speech. Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle were, in my honest opinion, absolutely brilliant and completely successful in the very hard goal of paying tribute to a stupendous literature work.

Já vos referi a Jane Austen (View from Pompidou and Vanity vs. Pride), pelo que não será novidade para vocês que aprecie bastante o seu trabalho. “Orgulho e Preconceito” foi na realidade o primeiro romance que li dela e lembro-me de ter gostado tanto que comprei “Mansfield Park” e “Sensibilidade e Bom-senso” no dia seguinte. Hoje achei que vos podia trazer Orgulho e Preconceito, a série de tv, que já antes foi mencionada pelo nosso autor convidado DarkJade no seu post The King’s Speech. Colin Firth e Jennifer Ehle foram, na minha honesta opinião, absolutamente brilhantes e muito bem sucedidos na difícil tarefas de prestar tributo a um estupendo trabalho literário.

 

Notting Hill

Some of us heard the news about the closure of The Travel Bookshop, the bookstore who inspired Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in the movie Notting Hill. It’s sad to know such a lovely place won’t be able to offer tourists its charm anymore.

Directed by Roger Michell, the film was well received by critics, and became the highest grossing British film released back in 1999.

The music was composed by Trevor Jones. Several additional songs written by other artists including Elvis Costello’s cover of the Charles Aznavour song "She", Shania Twain’s remixed version of "You’ve Got A Way", as well as Ronan Keating’s specially recorded cover of "When You Say Nothing at All" were a reason why the movie was so successful.

Alguns de nós ouvimos a notícia sobre o encerramento da The Travel Bookshop, a livraria que inspirou Hugh Grant e Julia Roberts no filme Notting Hill. É triste saber um lugar tão adorável não será capaz de continuar oferecer aos turistas o seu encanto.

Dirigido por Roger Michell, o filme foi bem recebido pelos críticos, tornando-se o maior sucesso de bilheteira britânica em 1999, aquando do seu lançamento.

A música foi composta por Trevor Jones. Várias músicas adicionais escritas por outros artistas, incluindo o cover de Elvis Costello da canção de Aznavour "She", a versão remix da Shania Twain de "You’ve got a Way", bem como o cover especialmente gravado para o filme de Ronan Keating de "When You Say Nothing At All "são uma das razões pelas quais o filme foi tão bem sucedido.

Some time ago I found the video bellow at Designiscool and thought it was worth sharing. It’s a piece of government propaganda that is actually very well structured and catchy. While visiting Europe, there’s no better way to travel than by train (if you’ve got enough time, of course). Choosing the train will make it possible for you to acknowledge the different landscapes and the way vegetation evolves as soon as you enter a new country.

Há algum tempo atrás eu encontrei o vídeo abaixo em Designiscool e achei que valia a pena partilhar. Trata.se de uma peça de propaganda do governo que é realmente muito bem estruturada e cativante. Ao visitar a Europa, não há melhor maneira de viajar do que de comboio (se tem tempo suficiente, é claro). Escolher o comboio fará permitir-lhe-á observar as diferentes paisagens e a forma como a  vegetação evolui sempre que se entra noutro país.

The Iron Lady, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, is an Anglo-Franco film about Margaret Thatcher, the longest serving Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of the 20th century. Meryl Streep and Alexandra Roach (in her early political years) both did a brilliant work and were very successful, in my opinion, at portraying the first female British prime minister.

A Dama de Ferro, realizado por Phyllida Lloyd, é um filme anglo-francês sobre Margaret Thatcher, a Primeira Ministra do Reino Unido que mais tempo esteve no poder no século XX. Meryl Streep e Alexandra Roach (nos seus primeiros anos na política), ambas fizeram um trabalho brilhante e foram muito bem sucedidas, na minha opinião, na sua interpretação da primeira mulher primeiro-ministra britânica.
