Arizona, Grand Canyon, Hiking, Trail

I was woken up in the morning after a windy night by the squeaks of the huge elk.

After having a breakfast we all went don to the down to the  the Kaibab Trail led by a guide who explained about the wildlife (some of the other guys didn’t hand around and just walked all the way down). From what I remember the guide had somewhat unnerving shake in his hands but he seemed fairly fit and cable of leading the group. In true National Park ranger style we had a tour of the history and all the various types of cacti, plants and wildlife on the way down.

We decided to go a little further after the tour finished. BIG mistake. It is definitely  a lot easier going down then it is up. We got a fair bit down, although it didn’t; actually look like we had gone any where within the canyon, however what goes down must go back up again. On the way back up the clouds finally gave in and the miserable day became even more miserable. Making the climb up cold and wet. The sandy soil became all muddy and this only added to the challenge – hmm never mind doing this in the sun shine its just as difficult in the rain!

To cap if off back at the campsite it cost $2 for an 8 minute shower! GRRRRR

In the evening we went to see an IMAX film about the Grand Canyon. Yet again the night was bitterly cold – I was glad I invested in a hat and some woolly gloves.

Have a look here to see the hiking trail and plenty more pictures.

Colorado, Grand Canyon, Helicopter, Horse Shoe Canyon

Unsurprisingly it was a late start in the morning. We headed back off the bus and went out back on the road, First stop we parked in a n obscure carp park and walk down a dusty lane and up a hill to the most impressive views of this:IMG_7628

We headed back out onto the road towards the Grand Canyon. We eventually got there and got our first taste of the enormity of it.

The best way however to get a view of the the Canyon is form the Air!

So some of us when off to the airport, we were weighed, introduced to our (very cool) pilot with his aviators and then sat within the helicopter. Unfortunately with a helicopter full of ladies – I was pretty much the heaviest so I was put right in the middle back seat. Oh well. Any way we took off and the pilot got us to introduce our selves. With no hesitation I said I loved flying… and got the reply “You won;t mind if I do this”, pitched up and down very quickly, resulting in some muted screams from the ladies. (Unfortunately I got a DVD of the ride (yes I know I’m a sucker) and its not obvious why there is sudden screaming in the video).

Any way peering over the shoulders of everyone I still managed to see some impressive views and scenes. Sadly the sky was a bit washed out so the colours of the canyon aren’t fantastic.

We then drove back down to the campsite and found it surrounded by Elk. These thing are like dear – but 3 times as big. Good job they aren’t carnivores because they could easily eat you. I just wanted them to stay away form my tent in the night!

Here is the route from today
