1. Flanders, Belgium

Belgians love chocolate almost as much as they love beer – and by that I mean, a lot. They’re known for its chocolate quality and innovation. Hans Burie’s Chocolatier in Antwerp and Laurent Gerbaud’s creations in Brussels are just two examples of a very long list of good chocolate.

2. Ghana

Do you know Tetteh Quarshie? This was the man responsible for planting the first cacao seeds in Ghana, germinating the agricultural industry which made Ghana the primary cocoa exporter for most of the 20th century. You can actually visit Ghana’s first cocoa plant at Quarshie’s farm. Check this post.

Conhece Tetteh Quarshie?

3. Óbidos, Portugal

I’ve already introduced you to the International Chocolate Festival which takes place in Óbidos every Spring.

4. Venezuela

The rarest and finest of the three varieties of cocoa bean is the criollo – known for its lingering aftertaste as featuring vanilla, caramel and nuts. The Paria Peninsula – known as the ‘Chocolate Coast’, in Venezuela – is the origin of the most sought-after criollos. Family-run farms, such as Hacienda Bukare, which you can visit, produce the best cocoa beans.

5. Bournville, Birmingham, England

Well, there’s no Oompa-Loompas like in Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory but Birmingham’s Cadbury World feeds the need in us all to drool over chocolate. Make sure you visit the World’s Biggest Cadbury Shop.

6. Southern Belize

Before Columbus got lost on his way to the East Indies, the Maya and Aztecs of Central America were already tucking into xocolatl and kukuh – bitter, spiced drinks concocted from cocoa beans. Nowadays, they’re famous for their Green & Black’s chocolate, whose Maya Gold bars are based on the ancient kukuh recipe.

… to visit Seychelles one day.

Seychelles’ enviable climate is always warm and without extremes. This tropical haven is proud of its multi-ethnic roots and for over two centuries, the islands have welcomed different races, traditions and religions from the four corners of the earth. Undeniably, the beaches are the big attraction and  the white sand lapped by topaz waters and backed by lush hills and big glacis boulders are totally worth the experience. However that’s not all there’s to see: ecotourism is also an option and the Seychelles is a top spot to watch birds and giant tortoises in their natural habitat.
