Yes, I know that pizza is originally Italian and that they’ve totally perfected this worldwide famous meal. However, pizza has achieved such an important status that all over the world, we’re able to find several distinct versions/adaptations of the original recipe. Let’s see how the Americans look at this delicacy.
New York Style
New York-style pizza usually has a puffy, bread-like, outer crust which quickly tapers down to a very thin, crisp middle. The crust is characteristically dark brown and somewhat charred in appearance. It is traditionally hand-tossed and light on sauce.

Chicago Style
Chicago-style pizza typically has a crust up to three inches tall at the edge, slightly higher than the ingredients, which include large amounts of cheese and chunky tomato sauce.

California Style
California-style pizza is a style of single-serving pizza that combines New York and Italian thin crust with toppings from the California cuisine cooking style.

I love pizza! I wish I had a slice right now
Why did you have to make me wanna eat pizza?
) Now I want some
Ok, not from America, because I am in Romania, but anyway
Actually, pizza is not an Italian invention. The ancient Greek plakous and flatbreads of central and southern Asia predate the Italian ‘pizza’.
those are all making me hungry! =D
Add another style, that I was taught was Sicilian (although I have no idea if it came from Sicily). It’s deep dish with a thick chewy crust an always prepared in a rectangular pan. It’s ingredients are put on in a bit of a reverse order – olive oil, cheese, toppings, and small pools of thick sauce. it’s cooked until the crust along the corners and edges is very crisp, usually slightly burned.
viva pizza!
Oh meeee Gee!!!! This pizza gave me a food orgasim! Yummy!
now I’m hungry.
Nice post. Coal fired pizza seems to be gaining popularity. They even have a sign that it is not burnt…the crust is supposed to be dark from the intense heat.
The pizza we think of today – flat bread and tomato sauce – didn’t come about until “after” the European discovery of America.
“The innovation that gave us the flat bread we call pizza was the use of tomato as a topping. For some time after the tomato was brought to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century, it was believed by many Europeans to be poisonous (as are some other fruits of the nightshade family). However, by the late 18th century, it was common for the poor of the area around Naples to add tomato to their yeast-based flat bread, and so the pizza began. The dish gained in popularity, and soon pizza became a tourist attraction as visitors to Naples ventured into the poorer areas of the city to try the local specialty.”

So, in effect, one of the most important ingredients come from this side of the fence!
And I DO love the food. Recommend – http://www.firstpizza.com/ – “In 1897 an Italian immigrant reinvented a Napoletana staple food into one of the worlds most eaten foods. New York City was the birth place of New York style pizza. During the year of 1905, Lombardi’s was licensed by the City of New York, becoming America’s First Pizzeria.”
Excellent place to go if you’re visiting. (my words)
Chicago Style is the way to go… If you are ever in the Chicago area, check out Exchequer Restaurant & Pub… It is our favorite place to get Chicago style Pizza…
The Gateway City, St. Louis, MO, has its unique style of American pizza that midwesterners thoroughly love. The definitive characteristics of St. Louis-style pizza is a very thin crust (like the Romans like) made without yeast, the use of Provel processed cheese vice Mozzarella, and the pizzas are cut into squares or rectangles instead of wedges.
I also make my own pizzas here at home using Italian flatbread, called Piadina Romagnolo, as my dough. You can read about two of my basic styles by clicking on these links: http://thepalladiantraveler.com/good-chefs/lazy-persons-pesto-based-flatbread-pizza/ and http://thepalladiantraveler.com/good-chefs/lazy-persons-bell-pepper-sauce-based-flatbread-pizza/
Ciao!
Thank you so much for sharing =) Next time I’m making pizza I’ll have yours in mind as an inspiration!
Definitely the best photographed pizza in America
You made me hungry at midnight. Stop! I could eat all 3.
Ahah
Amy’s vegan frozen pizza. I dislike frozen pizzas, but this one is really good. The best pizza I have ever eaten was not in Italy, but in Chile a few weeks ago – Chilli Pepper Pizza. The crust was much thinner than in Italy and it tasted so good.
Chilli Pepper Pizza sounds really good =) Thanks for sharing
