DarkJade’s Films of Meaning – Singin’ In The Rain
by DarkJade
What do you get when you put together A Man That Can Float (Gene Kelly), A Man That Can Fly (Donald O’Connor), and A Woman Beyond Her Years (Debbie Reynolds)…
Singin’ In The Rain…
The Story;
In 1927, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a famous on-screen romantic pair. Lina, however, mistakes the on-screen romance for real love. Don has worked hard to get where he is today, with his former partner Cosmo. When Don and Lina’s latest film is transformed into a musical, Don has the perfect voice for the songs. But Lina – well, even with the best efforts of a diction coach, they still decide to dub over her voice. Kathy Selden is brought in, an aspiring actress, and while she is working on the movie, Don falls in love with her. Will Kathy continue to “aspire”, or will she get the break she deserves? – Description Written by Colin Tinto
First of all, let me start by saying “Gene Kelly” is one of My Favorite All Time Entertainers…
And in this Film, he is Truly Something Special…
What’s to be said about Gene Kelly, He’s an Entertainment Icon whose Earned Every Ounce of his Accolade…
And Man Can He Dance… He’s My Favorite All Time Dancer
Accompanying him is “Donald O’Connor“
Man Can This Man Move… He Reminds me of the Absolute Essence of “The Wizard of OZ”
Fricken Unbelievable…
And Let us not Forget… “Debbie Reynolds“
Only 19 Years Old when she did this Film, she took 3 Different Buses to get to Studio Rehearsals, and would sometimes Sleep Overnight in the Studio to avoid all of the Traveling…
She may have one of the “Greatest Work Ethics” in Hollywood ever… Not to mention she’s “Carey Fisher“‘s Mom…
Lol… Which Scores some Extra Points as far as I’m Concerned…
Even though The Original “Star Wars” was My Favorite Film, I didn’t actually like Princess Leia when I was a Kid, Lol
But I came Around in “The Empire Strikes Back“
The Truth is, Carrie Fisher is Something Very Special, Just Like Her Mom…
And Just Like her mom, She was Also Very Young, Only 20-21, When She Did The Original “Star Wars”… Another Actress, Way Beyond Her Years.
Character Actors;
Yes “Singin’ In The Rain” Also had Brilliant Character Actors… Like The Studio Head “R.F. Simpson“, who was Great (The Guy in the Middle)…
But More than that, “Jean Hagan“ who played Lina Lamont
The “Not as Dumb as she Seemed“, Squeaky Voiced Silent Film Actress, who tries to pull one over on “Debbie Reynolds” Character, but in the end, she ends up in the Mud
She basically would have stolen the show, if she hadn’t been Surrounded by Genius…
“Singin’ in The Rain” is a Comical…
Musical…
Masterpiece… And Should Be Missed By None…
Nuff Said
Thanks for Watching/Reading/Listening

They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore!
Yeah, it’s a Different Time for sure… To make Films Like that takes an Immense Amount of Heart, and Effort… And many, many Special Actors Etc.

Great review! Love Gene Kelly. I don’t think I realized how young Debbie Reynolds was at the time this movie was made.
When you watch it again with that in mind, it’s pretty mind boggling… She’s about as Professional as Professional can be… A True Class Act Talent

Definitely a masterpiece! I’ve thought of reviewing this film a couple of times but never really got the courage to go through with it (there’s always the “don’t mess up with classics!” issue).. And I’m glad I didn’t because you’re so much better than me on film reviews and this one deserved the best! Great work! Thanks!
Thank you so much Ana
And You’re Right, there is the “don’t mess up with classics” thing… One of the Reasons I kept it Simple… Used Several Video Clips, to let the Film Show off itself… To a Degree…
Give the Readers a “Visual Reflection” of something they’re “Oh So Familiar” with…
And Like I said, “What can you say about Gene Kelly”… I mean, the Guy is one of the Best Things that ever happened to Hollywood… Ever… At least as far as I’m concerned.
But I do appreciate your Compliment, and I did try to be extra careful with this one, it’s a “Treasure” for sure
Thanks Ana

I’ve always loved that ‘I can’t stand him’ scene. Wonderful. You’re right, Jean Hagan was excellent in it.
Yeah She’s Hilarious
