Part 1: Bridges Around The World
The Wind and Rain Bridge (Sanjian County, China)
Built in 1916 in order to resemble a rainbow, this bridge is an original architectural structure made only by wood and stone.
Gateshead Millennium – Newcastle, UK
The most amazing thing about this exquisite bridge is that it appears as if an eye is winking whenever it is raised and lowered.
Khaju Bridge – Isfahan, Iran
Finished in 1650, this gorgeous bridge with an amazing Persian architecture is built over the River Zayandeh and it regulates the flow of the river.
Millau Bridge – France
The world’s taller vehicular bridge was opened to the public in 2004. Millau is suspended over land, not water, and many of the ones that already experienced it say that crossing it, when the fog rolls in, feels like crossing the sky.
D. Maria Bridge - Porto, Portugal
It’s a railway iron bridge built in 1877 by Gustave Eiffel. Its two-hinged crescent arch used to carry the railway, before a modern bridge was constructed in 1991.

Ah, another bridge fan. Amazing what engineers can do with the right materials and a good understanding of physics. And how incredible that so many forms can follow this basic function.
I love how the bridges can represent each culture – makes for an interesting series.
Very cool collection. Hard to pick a favourite.
love the millau viaduct and the newcastle bridge…its technology at its best in terms of engineering and asthetics
They’re all beautiful! Great designs! Thanks!
Olga
Love bridges! That first one is truly beautiful. Course I love the “Eye” too. You can sit outside the Baltic Art Gallery (weather permitting!) with a coffee and watch it roll up and down again- awesome.
Its a good blog
This was pretty great. I like the contrast of modern and old architecture. Great stuff.
