by DarkJade
First of all, I’d like to say Thank You to Ana who has given me the Opportunity to be a Guest Author on her Site.

That said, welcome to The First of my New Film Series, DarkJade’s Films of Meaning.
A Series I’ve Created for Ana’s Site, and one I hope you Enjoy.
Amistad;
Recently I sat down to watch one of my Favorite Steven Spielberg Films… Amistad.
Now I’m not sure if you’ve seen this Film, but if you haven’t, you should.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but during the course of Steven Spielberg’s Career, he generally makes what you might call Block Busters, followed by a Film more filled of… For lack of a better word, “Meaning”, lol
This Trend Really Began back in 1985, with the Film, The Color Purple.
Also an Excellent Film, and basically, a Must See for anyone who Desires Depth from Films.
Examples;
1985 – The Color Purple – (Depth)
1987 – Empire of the Sun – (Depth) – A Phenomenal Film by the way
1989 – Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – (Block Buster)
1991 – Hook – (Block Buster)
1993 – Jurassic Park – (Block Buster)
1993 – Schindler’s List – (Depth) – And, Amazing
1997 – The Lost World:Jurassic Park (Block Buster) – Hmm, I think I blocked this one out, lol
1997 – Amistad – (Depth)
1998 – Saving Private Ryan – (Depth)
You see how that works… It’s something that I noticed back when they were being made, particularly from 1985-1998.
My Theory was/is, The Block Busters help to secure the Budgets of The Films of More Meaning… And/Or Depth.
Which helped to allow Steven to do the Films he really wanted to do. Not that he didn’t want to do the “Fun” Money Making Movies, but you know what I mean.
Back to Amistad.
The Story of Amistad is a bit of a Complicated one…
The Story Begins with a Group of Africans on the Ship Amistad, or La Amistad… That have been Illegally taken from Africa, brought to a place called a “Slave Fortress”, sold, and given New Names to hide the fact that they are indeed Africans.
They are then to be delivered to Cuba, but during the Trip the slaves, lead by a Slave named Cinque, overtake the Amistad, and force the Captain to take them back to Africa.
This, however, does not occur, as the Captain changes the Direction of the Ship.
Which leads to my Favorite Scene, and Shot in the Film… Start The Clip Below at about the 6:00 Mark, and it will lead to my Favorite Scene/Shot, when Cinque, by looking at the Night Sky, is able to determine that they are not heading to Africa… He then takes the Wheel himself, and steers the Ship back on course, by looking up at the Stars… Look at how the Starlight Reflects off his Skin… Truly Remarkable… Spielberg at his Absolute Best
I find myself out of time, and so let me Finish with this… The Cinematography is Gorgeous, the Directing is Masterful, The Story is Beyond Meaningful, The Cast and Acting is Tremendous… And the Music, just Beautiful
This Film, is Meaningful…
Thanks for Reading/Listening

I remember seeing this film about a year or so after it was released…it certainly was a powerful piece of work, a fine companion to Schindler’s List, in a sense.
The real life story–which was pretty tightly followed by Spielberg’s script–wasn’t well known prior to the film, though it was something of a capstone to the long and storied career of John Quincy Adams.
Thanks for the post; looking forward to future installments.
Interesting to hear that about Quincy Adams, as that Character was Masterfully Written, and Masterfully Acted by Anthony Hopkins… Though he is one of my Favorite Actors… Still, it was good, even compared to some of his other work.
See him in “The Edge” if you haven’t… Not sure how well known that Film is to people in regards to him, as it was kind of a Thriller-ish Film… Kinda… But His Acting, and Role in it, was Exceptional… And who can forget Silence of the Lambs, lol… Unbelievable, he became one of my Favorite all time actors after that
Thanks for the Comment Kerry

I haven’t seen it, I will definitely have a go! Thank you Dark Jade!
Keep in mind, the Opening Scene is a bit tough… But, realistic I suspect
Thanks for the Comment Kristina

Amistad is certainly one powerful, thought-provoking, even disturbing movie. Thanks for the reminder of how wonderful it is.
I feel the same way… When I saw it again, I was like “wow”, and it always strikes me this way… Definitely worth bringing up again and again… Especially for those who have yet to see it, it’s definitely not one to miss.
But it gets me every time “GIVE ME!! FREEDOM!!” goose bumps thinken about it.
Thanks for the Comment Xin

@Old Wolf, there’s a few more things listed earlier on IMDB. but it’s the first thing that I saw him in I believe, also looks to be his First Major Film… The other Role that people most likely know him from is “Gladiator”… And you’re right, he does not appear to Age, lol
p.s. I never did see “Blood Diamond”
DarkJade-
you … never..saw…Blood Diamond!?
Go to your room and dont come out till youve seen it! LOL
Another historical incident and events tell the story of Sierra Leons “civil” war and the atrocties Largely ignored by western media and also, mostly financed by western companies in the diamond industry,
Its the movie the have to relectuntly admit Leonardo DiCaprio is a damn fine actor. Damint, I want to hate him!
Anyway, our man Hounsou is amazing again. Id forgot about Gladiator. Yep, good in that too!
Anyway, DO see this movie. I know quite a bit more than most about the events depicted and can help if you like to point out whats fact and whats “artistic licence”

I have to say, I’ve liked Leonardo DiCaprio ever since I saw What’s Eating Gilbert Grape… Still to this day, it’s hard to believe that’s an Actor, and not someone who really has those Issues… Check it out if you’ve never seen it, it’s a Performance of a Life Time for him, and the one that’s stuck with me since the beginning of his career.
Other than that, I liked him in Romeo and Juliet, and The Aviator… Also Inception was very good.
One of the reasons you may have forgotten Hounsou was in Gladiator is, in my opinion, he actually looks very different in that Film than in Amistad… Not only does he look younger, something about him looks different… And his Character is completely different than the one in Amistad, which he was Exceptional in…
As far a Blood Diamond, I sometimes don’t see Films that look like they’re going to be True Tragedies… Maybe I’m wrong, but I assumed some of the Characters weren’t going to make it through the movie…
Tragedy is ok sometimes, but I have to be in a certain mood for it… On that note, One of the reasons I hardly watch Romeo and Juliet, new or old, is the Ending Tears me up every time… So though I love Shakespeare, as he is my Favorite Writer, Romeo and Juliet is a bit Tough for me… Hamlet I’ll watch a 1,000 times, lol… It’s my Favorite Piece of his Work
Thanks for the Comment, I’ll check out Blood Diamond
I do know that Leonardo can Act
DarkJade-
Yes he can act. I hate it, nut he’s really. great. I think Nolan didnt push him near enough in Inception (a real favorite of mine though as a movie.. another subject)
As far as Blood Diamond, ummm perhaps you should skip it. It was a tragic time
They story does matter still IMHO
Keep posting your reviews (and scribbles. I LMAO) Love it!
Nah, I’ll see it… I’ve wanted to, just haven’t gotten around to it… And sadly, I agree that Leonardo isn’t pushed enough… Something that often happens when Actor’s get Huge, is they start to be Directed Less in my Opinion… And it’s not a good thing, at all.
DarkJade-
I love this film !
So do I, thanks for the Comment Gilderic
DarkJade-
Interesting post. You do know that this was actual history Im sure and a very important reason I think people should see this film. Like Schindlers List Steven found a truly amazing story that was better than fiction and gave the audience an awful lot to think about. Hopkins portrayal of Adams was IMHO one of his very best performances of his career.
More about Amistad case: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amistad_(1841)
Yeah, I know it happened. And I agree that it is one of the reasons that people should watch it. I agree that Steven Spielberg does a tremendous job at depicting History in Film. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to go into the Acting Performances, due to not wanting the Post to get too long, but I agree that it was one of Anthony Hopkin’s Best Performances… He absolutely Captivates you in every scene, as he represents the very fabric of an American Founder. Djimon Hounsou, who plays Cinque, is also Exceptional, and really Captures the Spirit of the Story.
Thanks for your Comment Old Wolf
DarkJade-
Wasnt this Djimon Hounsou first role? I just saw Blood Diamond again a few weeks back. He DOESNT AGE! ARGHHH!
As I’ve told you before, well done! This will certainly be a very interesting series
Thanks so much Ana
